MENTAL FITNESS

Mental fitness means taking care of your emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

Just as physical fitness helps our bodies to stay strong, mental fitness helps us to achieve and sustain a state of good mental health. When we are mentally healthy, we enjoy our life and environment, and the people in it.

WELLNESS LESSONS

Mental fitness lessons can help build a state of well-being and cultivate awareness of how we think, behave and feel.

A person's mental fitness indicates their ability to think clearly and to make decisions efficiently and effectively. A parallel can be drawn with physical fitness, which relates to the body's ability to function. During these lessons, students will explore this relationship and learn how both mental and physical fitness can impact on overall wellbeing.

During PE Classes, students will learn and engage in a curriculum created by NormanAid Wellness Counselors to explore 11 different MonthlyAid themes.  Curriculum is taught through a variety of podcasts, speakers, interactive activities, videos and film screenings.

KEY OUTCOMES

Students will be able to:

  • understand the concept of mental fitness
  • appreciate the similarities and differences between physical and mental fitness
  • understand what they can do to improve their mental fitness and overall wellbeing by learning how to seek support, manage stress, set goals, self accept, create healthy relationships and build resilience.
  • engage with mental health resources such as substance misuse prevention, digital safety, self-care and self-reflection.

When we look at mental fitness broadly, we are looking at how healthy and balanced our emotions and thought patterns are overall. Do they help us achieve our life goals and to connect well to the people we care most about? Do they support our wellbeing and our values, or do they frequently lead us to behave in ways that we regret?

Taking steps to build your mental fitness enhances our ability to cope with stress and improves your physical health, productivity at school, relationships, and overall happiness.

Remember that mental fitness is not an ‘all or nothing’ thing; there are degrees of fitness, and everyone can find room for improvement!
