Mental Illness

n

Mental “illness” is an umbrella term for whenever your mental health is poor, namely when you have a diagnosed mental disorder. Some people have mental illnesses for a short time, caused by a traumatic or extremely stressful event or situation. Some people have a mental illness for their entire lives.

Examples of mental illnesses:

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Eating Disorders (such as Anorexia and Bulimia)
  • Substance Use Disorders

It is important to remember that mental illnesses are treatable through medication and psychosocial therapies which allows those who live with mental illness to lead a healthy life. Living with a mental illness may require additional care and attention but it does not need to limit your ability to achieve your goals or pursue your dreams.
