The PSAT’s are administered once a year, in October. For the 2012/2013 school year the PSAT will be administered on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 during the school day.   The test is approximately two hours and ten minutes in length, with about 50 minutes needed for test-related activities.

The PSAT’s are generally administered to sophomores and juniors in High School. The PSAT/NMSQT can aid students, parents, and counselors in several ways. Students who plan to go to colleges requiring entrance examinations will find the PSAT/NMSQT a realistic preview of the type of questions and format which will be used in these entrance examinations. When scores are reported in December, students receive a comprehensive analysis of their performance on the test, which can aid in further preparation for the ACT or SAT.  Secondly, PSAT results, along with a student’s current grade point average and an analysis of the anticipated coursework to be completed by the time of his or her graduation, enables the student’s guidance  counselor  to give realistic recommendations regarding college choice in the latter part of the junior year, rather than waiting until a busy senior year. Thirdly, the PSQT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for juniors to enter the National Merit Scholarship competition, which offers scholarship aid in financing a college education.  In addition, the PSAT/NMSQT results are reported to colleges, which use the results to recruit candidates to apply for admission

Please note that no subject tests are offered at the March administration, and that Language tests with Listening are offered only in November.

Beginning with the October, 2012 administration, all students MUST register online in order to test.  Students who miss the registration deadline may no longer simply walk in to a test center on test day and register to test.  If the student misses the registration deadline, he or she should still register online and pay the testing fees.  Their names will be added to a waitlist for the test center requested.  Waitlisted students will be admitted on a first come-first served basis on test day.  If the waitlisted student is turned away from the test center, their registration fees will be refunded.  Paper registration forms with an accompanying letter from a clergyperson on church/temple letterhead are required for students who are registering for the first time and must test on Sunday for religious reasons.  These forms are available in the College and Career Center.

Only registered testers will be admitted on test day.  Testers no longer may switch test types (Reasoning to Subject or Subject to Reasoning), test centers, or test dates.  Testers may still add, delete, or change which subject tests they wish to take on test day.  On test day, students MUST bring their admission ticket and a current photo ID in order to test.  Valid IDs include current year school ID, state issued Driver’s License (not paper permit) or State ID, or a valid passport that shows a current photo of the test taker.  Students who arrive without a valid photo ID and admission ticket will be turned away.  There are no exceptions to this rule.

Beginning with the March, 2013 test, ALL students must upload a current photo (individual passport-type head shot) when registering.  This photo will then be printed on the admission ticket.  Students who have already registered for test dates prior to March, 2013, or intend to register for those earlier test dates may be requested to upload their current photo, but will be allowed to test if their admission ticket does not include a photo.
